Lake County Housing Authority Receives Nationwide Acknowledgment
For the third consecutive year, 16 awards in total, Lake County Housing Authority (LCHA) received nationwide acknowledgment for their innovative programs in housing and community development.
LCHA received notification from the leading housing and community development advocate, NAHRO, of their latest honor of five additional Awards of Merit.
NAHRO, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials gives national recognition to innovative housing and community development projects, programs, and services provided by NAHRO agency members throughout the country.
One of LCHA’s programs receiving an Award of Merit this year, “Fun, Folks, and Flowers,” has further been nominated for an Award of Excellence. The Award of Excellence is chosen by national juries and presented at the NAHRO National Conference and Exhibition in October. They represent the very best in innovative programs in assisted housing and community development. Candid photos of this noteworthy program are featured on the cover and within the pages of the widely distributed NAHRO publication of all award recipients.
Through these programs, agencies such as LCHA have risen to the challenge to address the needs of income-challenged people, to improve our neighborhoods and communities through vision and perseverance. The best solutions are often local and LCHA is committed to serving its communities through groundbreaking programs and services that address local needs and opportunities.
This year’s programs receiving a ‘nod’ are:
Fun, Folks, and Flowers
Mini Netbooks Make Work Light
Positioning People for Possibilities
Supplying Seasonal Sanctuary
There Is No I in Team
Lake County Housing Authority Pursues HUD Grant
$222,561 Awarded in Renewal Funding
Dedicated FSS Program Coordinators to Assist Public Housing & Housing Choice Voucher Participants Obtain Jobs & Economic Independence
These days, the battle for supportive service dollars is fierce and often unproductive. As in 2010, the Housing Authority of Lake County has come out triumphant. It has been awarded a share of $15 million from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development effort to help public housing & Section 8 participants find jobs. LCHA was awarded renewal funding of $222,561 for fiscal year 2011 for Public Housing Family & Housing Choice Voucher Self Sufficiency (FSS) coordination.
This funding from HUD’s Public and Indian Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Program allows LCHA to maintain program coordinators who work directly with participants to connect them with local education and training opportunities, job placement organizations and local employers.
“Family self-sufficiency programs have a proven track record of helping families succeed,” HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said. “When families are given the tools they need to join a skilled work force, they move beyond HUD’s rental assistance programs to self-sufficiency.”
LCHA’s commitment to this belief is evidenced by a current staff of four full-time FSS coordinators in the Housing Choice Voucher program & public housing, whose salaries have not been supported by HUD revenues in prior years.
2010 Champion in Housing Award (Northern Region)
Lake County Housing Authority
Nan McKay and Associates is proud to recognize the Lake County Housing Authority as the winner of the 2010 Champion in Housing Award in the Northern Region.
This forward-looking agency serves their region well, with the good sense to use outside resources where deficiencies in the agency can be improved.
LCHA works with local groups like the Girl Scouts, hosting educational events and fundraisers. With a major focus on bettering the community, LCHA goes beyond merely providing housing — their contributions and efforts within their neighborhoods are excellent examples of the way that housing authorities can truly make a difference.
Jason Lee, regional account manager at Nan McKay and Associates, presents the 2010 Champion in Housing Award to David Northern, executive director of the Lake County Housing Authority.
